Kaufman County Burn Ban Has Been Lifted

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The burn ban in Kaufman County will be allowed to expire at midnight tonight (Nov 1, 2017), according to Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards.

The Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court enacted the burn ban on September 18, 2017, during a special-called Commissioners’ Court meeting, after a recommendation by Richards based on fire danger and drought conditions.

Brush, branches, limbs, leaves and unpainted or untreated lumber are the only items that can be burned on open ground when there is not a burn ban, according to the Fire Marshal's website. All other items must be disposed of at an approved solid waste site.

Before burning brush piles, notify the Kaufman County dispatch at (972) 932-9799. Brush burning is to be performed after sunrise and cease before sunset.

Those burning should preform necessary precautions to ensure a safe fire. Fires should be monitored and a cell phone should be handy in case of an emergency or the fire gets out of control.

Residents can burn common household trash in a burn ban under certain conditions including, burning in a safe area, the barrel has a screen on top that suppresses sparks and embers, a water hose or other sufficient water source is readily available to extinguish the fire, the fire is monitored by an adult, and the smoke emitted form the barrel does not create any negative effects to a residence or other sensitive receptor such as livestock barns, greenhouses, or businesses.

Additionally, burn barrels cannot be buried on your own property, it must be taken to an approved solid waste site.

For more information, visit the Kaufman County Fire Marshal's website.
